What is a Strandbeest?
It is a wind powered walking example of artificial life created by Theo Jansen. He had a few of these beasts exhibited at the Peabody Essex Museum in Boston and is always evolving his creations.

It is a wind powered walking example of artificial life created by Theo Jansen. He had a few of these beasts exhibited at the Peabody Essex Museum in Boston and is always evolving his creations.
What we did in class:
- Students watched a video about Theo Jansen and his creations
- We discussed whether this was Science, Technology, Art, or a combination of all three.
- We came up with ways in which these wind-powered structures could be used to benefit everyday lives.
- Some of those ways included:
- Snow Removal, Art Creation, Building, Water Transportation, Wind Powered Energy
- Some of those ways included:
Then we used kits and decided to make our own. Students were divided into teams
and each member had a specific job.
We brainstormed ideas about teamwork and then took off!
